Crockpot Great Northern Beans

Can I use broth instead of water when I add the liquid?

You could add some bouillon to the water, if you do I would say use a ham base or a Chicken base.

What are ham hocks?

Ham hocks are simply the lower part of a pig’s foot. They are actually quite meaty and add a terrific flavor to the Great Northern Beans.

Could I add carrots and onions to the Great Northern Beans?

Carrots and onions are a really good addition to the beans. They add another layer of flavor. If you do add carrots, be sure to chop them small as you do not want the carrots to overpower the beans. As for onions, there are some onions in the recipe. You could certainly add another type of onion to the mix.
